Praise of the ‘Mental Tīrtha’ and the Marks of Purity
rathaiḥ sanandighoṣaiś na pṛṣṭhataḥ so ’nugamyate
Dharma is not upheld by mere power or excitement; one must know when and how to follow. Pursuit done “from behind” can imply impropriety—harassment, disrespect, or wrongful chasing—so ethical restraint and correct approach are essential.
Bhīṣma is delivering instruction (anuśāsana) and uses a compact, proverbial statement: even if one has chariots and loud, jubilant support, the person in question should not be pursued from behind—signalling a moral boundary on pursuit and conduct.
