उपवासफलात्मकविधिः — Upavāsa as Yajña-Equivalent Merit

वह सिंह और व्याप्र जुते हुए विमानसे यात्रा करता है और सत्तर हजार वर्षोतक स्वर्गलोकमें सुख भोगता है ।। मासादूर्ध्व नरव्याप्र नोपवासो विधीयते । विधिं त्वनशनस्याहु: पार्थ धर्मविदो जना:,पुरुषसिंह! एक माससे अधिक समयतक उपवास करनेका विधान नहीं है। कुन्तीनन्दन! धर्मज्ञ पुरुषोंने अनशनकी यही विधि बतायी है

māsād ūrdhva nara-vyāghra nopavāso vidhīyate | vidhim tv anaśanasya āhuḥ pārtha dharma-vido janāḥ ||

องคิรัสกล่าวว่า “โอ้พยัคฆ์ท่ามกลางมนุษย์ การถืออุโบสถมิได้บัญญัติให้เกินหนึ่งเดือน โอ้ปารถะ ผู้รู้ธรรมทั้งหลายกล่าวว่านี่แลคือระเบียบแห่งอนศนะ (การงดอาหาร)”
