Educational Q&A

Sacred knowledge is transmitted under ethical conditions: devotion and worthiness can qualify a student, yet the teacher must guard against deception. The verse highlights the tension between compassion (granting life-restoring lore) and discernment (ensuring the seeker is genuine).

Śukra addresses Kaca, acknowledging his success and Devayānī’s devotion toward him. Śukra is prepared to teach the life-restoring Mṛtasañjīvanī, but he sets a condition: Kaca must not be Indra in disguise, reflecting the ongoing rivalry and fear of the gods obtaining the secret through trickery.
