Ādi-parva Adhyāya 33: Vāsuki’s Council on Averting the Sarpa-satra
evam astv iti taṃ viṣṇur uvāca vinatāsutam | pratigṛhya varau tau ca garuḍo viṣṇum abravīt ||
The verse underscores ethical reciprocity and humility: when a boon is granted, the proper response is gratitude and respectful engagement, not pride. Divine assent (“evam astu”) is followed by the recipient’s mindful reply, modeling disciplined speech and duty-oriented intention.
Viṣṇu agrees to Garuḍa’s request(s) with “So be it.” Garuḍa accepts the two boons and then addresses Viṣṇu, continuing their dialogue that establishes Garuḍa’s relationship with Viṣṇu and his ensuing role and obligations.
