Gaṅgādvāra-tīrtha, Ulūpī-saṃvāda, and Arjuna’s Dharma-Deliberation (गङ्गाद्वार-तीर्थम्, उलूपी-संवादः)

(ततस्तु विश्वकर्माणं पूजयित्वा विसृज्य च । द्वैपायनं च सम्पूज्य विसृज्य च नराधिप । वार्ष्णेयमब्रवीद्‌ राजा गन्तुकामं कृतक्षणम्‌ ।। तदनन्तर विश्वकर्माका पूजन करके राजाने उन्हें विदा कर दिया। फिर व्यासजीको सम्मानपूर्वक विदा देकर राजा युधिष्छिरने जानेके लिये उद्यत हुए भगवान्‌ श्रीकृष्णसे कहा। युधिछिर उवाच तव प्रसादाद्‌ वार्ष्णेय राज्यं प्राप्त मयानघ । प्रसादादेव ते वीर शून्‍्यं राष्ट्र सुदुर्गमम्‌ ।। तवैव तु प्रसादेन राज्यस्थाश्न महामते । गतिस्त्वमन्तकाले च पाण्डवानां तु माधव ।। मातास्माकं पिता देवो न पाण्डुं विद्य वै वयम्‌ । ज्ञात्वा तु कृत्यं कर्तव्यं कारयस्व भवान्‌ हि नः । यदिष्टमनुमन्तव्यं पाण्डवानां त्वयानघ ।। युधिष्ठिर बोले--निष्पाप वृष्णिनन्दन! आपकी ही कृपासे मैंने राज्य प्राप्त किया है। वीर! आपके ही प्रसादसे यह अत्यन्त दुर्गम एवं निर्जन प्रदेश आज धन-धान्यसे सम्पन्न राष्ट्र बन गया। महामते! आपकी ही दयासे हमलोग राज्यसिंहासनपर आसीन हुए हैं। माधव! अन्तकालमें भी आप ही हम पाण्डवोंकी गति हैं। आप ही हमारे माता-पिता और दइष्टदेव हैं। हम पाण्डुको नहीं जानते। अनघध! आप स्वयं समझकर जो करनेयोग्य कार्य हो, वह हमसे करायें। पाण्डवोंके लिये जो अभीष्ट हो, उसी कार्यको करनेके लिये आप हमें अनुमति दें। श्रीवायुदेव उवाच त्वत्प्रभावान्महा भाग राज्यं प्राप्तं स्वधर्मतः । पितृपैतामहं राज्यं कथं न स्यात्‌ तव प्रभो ।। धार्तराष्ट्रा दुराचारा: कि करिष्यन्ति पाण्डवान्‌ | यथेष्टं पालय महीं सदा धर्मधुरं वह ।। धर्मोपदेशं संक्षेपाद्‌ ब्राह्मणान्‌ भज कौरव । अद्यैव नारद: श्रीमानागमिष्यति सत्वर: । आदृत्य तस्य वाक्यानि शासन कुरु तस्य वै ।। भगवान्‌ श्रीकृष्णने कहा--महाभाग! आपको अपने ही प्रभावसे अपने ही धर्मके फलस्वरूप राज्य प्राप्त हुआ है। प्रभो! जो राज्य आपके बाप-दादोंका ही है, वह आपको कैसे नहीं मिलता। धृतराष्ट्रके पुत्र दुराचारी हैं। वे पाण्डवोंका क्या कर लेंगे? आप इच्छानुसार पृथ्वीका पालन कीजिये और सदा धर्ममर्यादाकी धुरी धारण करिये। कुरुनन्दन! संक्षेपमें आपके लिये धर्मका उपदेश इतना ही है कि ब्राह्मणोंकी सेवा करिये। आज ही बड़ी जल्दीमें आपके यहाँ श्रीनारदजी पधारेंगे, उनका आदर-सत्कार करके उनकी बातें सुनिये और उनकी आज्ञाका पालन कीजिये। वैशम्पायन उवाच एवमुक्त्वा ततः कुन्तीमभिवाद्य जनार्दन: । उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा गमिष्यामि नमोःस्तु ते ।। वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! यों कहकर भगवान्‌ श्रीकृष्ण कुन्तीदेवीके पास गये और उन्हें प्रणाम करके मधुर वाणीमें बोले--'बुआजी! नमस्कार। अब मैं जाऊँगा (आज्ञा दीजिये)।' कुन्त्युवाच जातुषं गृहमासाद्य मया प्राप्तं च केशव । आर्येण चापि न ज्ञातं कुन्तिभोजेन चानघ ।। त्वया नाथेन गोविन्द दुःखं तीर्ण महत्तरम्‌ । त्वं हि नाथस्त्वनाथानां दरिद्राणां विशेषतः ।। सर्वदुःखानि शाम्यन्ति तव संदर्शनान्मम । स्मरस्वैनान्‌ महाप्राज्ञ तेन जीवन्ति पाण्डवा: ।। कुन्ती बोली--केशव! लाक्षागृहमें जाकर मैंने जो कष्ट भोगा है, उसे मेरे पूज्य पिता कुन्तिभोज भी नहीं जान सके हैं। गोविन्द! तुम्हारी सहायतासे ही मैं इस महान्‌ दुःख- समुद्रसे पार हुई हूँ। प्रभो! तुम अनाथोंके, विशेषतः दीन-दु:खियोंके नाथ (रक्षक) हो। तुम्हारे दर्शनसे हमारे सारे दुःख दूर हो जाते हैं। महामते! इन पाण्डवोंको सदा याद रखना। ये तुम्हारे शुभ चिन्तनसे ही जीवन धारण करते हैं। वैशम्पायन उवाच करिष्यामीति चामन्त्रय अभिवाद्य पितृष्वसाम्‌ । गमनाय मतिं चक्रे वासुदेव: सहानुग: ।।) वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--जनमेजय! तदनन्तर भगवान्‌ श्रीकृष्णने कुन्तीसे यह कहकर कि मैं आपकी आज्ञाका पालन करूँगा, प्रणाम करके, विदा ले सेवकोंसहित वहाँसे जानेका विचार किया। तां निवेश्य ततो वीरो रामेण सह केशव: । ययौ द्वारवतीं राजन्‌ पाण्डवानुमते तदा,राजन! इस प्रकार उस पुरीको बसाकर बलरामजीके साथ वीरवर श्रीकृष्ण पाण्डवोंकी अनुमति ले उस समय द्वारकापुरीको चले गये

tatas tu viśvakarmāṇaṃ pūjayitvā visṛjya ca | dvaipāyanaṃ ca sampūjya visṛjya ca narādhipa | vārṣṇeyam abravīd rājā gantukāmaṃ kṛtakṣaṇam ||

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca |

tava prasādād vārṣṇeya rājyaṃ prāpta mayānagha | prasādād eva te vīra śūnyaṃ rāṣṭraṃ sudurgamam ||

tavaiva tu prasādena rājyasthāśn mahāmate | gatis tvam antakāle ca pāṇḍavānāṃ tu mādhava ||

mātāsmākaṃ pitā devo na pāṇḍuṃ vidma vai vayam | jñātvā tu kṛtyaṃ kartavyaṃ kārayasva bhavān hi naḥ ||

yad iṣṭam anumantavyaṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ tvayānagha ||

śrīvāyudeva uvāca |

tvatprabhāvān mahābhāga rājyaṃ prāptaṃ svadharmataḥ | pitṛpaitāmahaṃ rājyaṃ kathaṃ na syāt tava prabho ||

dhārtarāṣṭrā durācārāḥ kiṃ kariṣyanti pāṇḍavān | yatheṣṭaṃ pālaya mahīṃ sadā dharmadhuraṃ vaha ||

dharmopadeśaṃ saṃkṣepād brāhmaṇān bhaja kaurava | adyaiva nāradaḥ śrīmān āgamiṣyati satvaraḥ ||

ādṛtya tasya vākyāni śāsanaṃ kuru tasya vai ||

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

evam uktvā tataḥ kuntīm abhivādya janārdanaḥ | uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā gamiṣyāmi namo 'stu te ||

kuntī uvāca |

jātuṣaṃ gṛham āsādya mayā prāptaṃ ca keśava | āryeṇa cāpi na jñātaṃ kuntibhojena cānagha ||

tvayā nāthena govinda duḥkhaṃ tīrṇaṃ mahattaram | tvaṃ hi nāthas tv anāthānāṃ daridrāṇāṃ viśeṣataḥ ||

sarvaduḥkhāni śāmyanti tava saṃdarśanān mama | smarasvainān mahāprājña tena jīvanti pāṇḍavāḥ ||

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

kariṣyāmīti cāmantya abhivādya pitṛṣvasām | gamanāya matiṃ cakre vāsudevaḥ sahānugaḥ ||

tāṃ niveśya tato vīro rāmeṇa saha keśavaḥ | yayau dvāravatīṃ rājan pāṇḍavānumate tadā ||

Vaiśampāyana said: After honoring Viśvakarman and dismissing him, and likewise honoring Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) and taking leave of him, the king addressed Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa), who was ready to depart at the appointed time. Yudhiṣṭhira said: “O blameless descendant of the Vṛṣṇis, by your grace I have obtained the kingdom. By your favor, O hero, this once desolate and hard-to-defend land has become a prosperous realm. By your compassion we have been established upon the royal seat. O Mādhava, even at the final hour you are the refuge of the Pāṇḍavas. You are our mother and father and our very deity; we scarcely know Pāṇḍu as our father. Knowing what must be done, please cause us to do what is right. Whatever is truly desired for the Pāṇḍavas—grant your consent for that.” Śrī Vāyudeva said: “O fortunate one, by your own power and as the fruit of your own dharma you have obtained the kingdom. How could the ancestral and paternal kingdom not come to you, O lord? The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra are of wicked conduct—what can they do to the Pāṇḍavas? Rule the earth as you deem fit, and always bear the yoke of dharma. In brief, this is the instruction: honor and serve the brāhmaṇas. Today, the illustrious Nārada will come swiftly; receive him with respect, heed his words, and carry out his direction.” Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, Janārdana bowed to Kuntī and, in gentle words, said, “I shall depart; salutations to you.” Kuntī said: “O Keśava, the suffering I endured upon reaching the house of lac (the lac-palace) was not known even to my noble father Kuntibhoja, O sinless one. With you as my protector, O Govinda, I have crossed a far greater ocean of sorrow. You are the protector of the unprotected, especially of the poor and afflicted. At the sight of you, all my sorrows are calmed. Remember these Pāṇḍavas, O great-minded one—for by your mindful care they live.” Vaiśampāyana said: Saying, “I will do so,” Vāsudeva took leave, bowed to his paternal aunt, and resolved to depart with his attendants. After settling that city, the heroic Keśava, together with Rāma (Balarāma), went to Dvāravatī with the Pāṇḍavas’ permission.

Educational Q&A

Righteous rule is sustained by dharma: the king should carry the ‘yoke of dharma,’ protect the realm without fear of unrighteous rivals, and especially honor and support brāhmaṇas; humility and receptivity to wise counsel (here, Nārada’s forthcoming instruction) are presented as practical pillars of ethical governance.

After the city/arrangements are completed, Yudhiṣṭhira respectfully dismisses Viśvakarman and Vyāsa, then expresses gratitude to Kṛṣṇa and asks for continued guidance. Kṛṣṇa (with Vāyudeva’s counsel reported in the passage) encourages confident dharmic kingship and announces Nārada’s imminent visit. Kṛṣṇa then bows to Kuntī; she recalls past sufferings and asks him to remember the Pāṇḍavas. Kṛṣṇa promises, takes leave, and departs for Dvārakā with Balarāma, with the Pāṇḍavas’ permission.
