paurā ūcuḥ | duryodhana-prayuktena pāpena akṛta-buddhinā | gṛham ātma-vināśāya kāritaṁ dāhitaṁ ca tat |

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical collapse that follows when rulers and agents act from envy and delusion: adharma-driven schemes meant to destroy the innocent rebound into self-destruction, and a king’s compromised judgment (Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s) becomes a central moral failing.

After the burning of the house built as a trap (the lac-house), the citizens comment that Purocana—acting under Duryodhana’s instigation—built the house for ruin and has now burned it; they also condemn Dhṛtarāṣṭra for treating the blameless sons of Pāṇḍu like enemies and consigning them to fire.
