इयं च मे मांसपेशी जाता पुत्रशताय वै | गान्धारीने कहा--मुने! मैंने सुना है, कुन्तीके एक ज्येष्ठ पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ है, जो सूर्यके समान तेजस्वी है। यह समाचार सुनकर अत्यन्त दुःखके कारण मैंने अपने उदरपर आघात करके गर्भ गिराया है। आपने पहले मुझे ही सौ पुत्र होनेका वरदान दिया था; परंतु आज इतने दिनों बाद मेरे गर्भसे सौ पुत्रोंकी जगह यह मांसपिण्ड पैदा हुआ है
iyaṃ ca me māṃsapeśī jātā putraśatāya vai |
ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า “ส่วนของเรานั้น แทนที่จะได้บุตรชายร้อยคนตามพร กลับมีเพียงก้อนเนื้อถือกำเนิดขึ้นเท่านั้น” ในเหตุการณ์โดยรอบ คานธารีเมื่อได้ยินว่ากุนตีให้กำเนิดโอรสองค์โตผู้รุ่งโรจน์ดุจดวงอาทิตย์ ก็ถูกความโศกและความริษยาครอบงำ จึงทุบครรภ์ตนเองจนแท้ง พรบุตรชายร้อยคนจึงปรากฏในรูปอันวิปริต และเป็นฉากตั้งต้นแห่งความตึงเครียดทางธรรมในเรือนกุรุสืบไป
