The verse highlights the dharmic priority of preserving a royal lineage and its social responsibilities; when succession is endangered, sanctioned extraordinary measures may be taken to sustain the Kuru line.
Vaiśampāyana states that three sons were born through Vyāsa in the ‘field’ of Vicitravīrya—i.e., within Vicitravīrya’s marital line—described as godlike and as enhancers of the Kuru dynasty.
