Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 103 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Gāndhārī Vivāha: Proposal, Consent, and the Vow
ततः सर्वान् महीपालान् पर्यविध्यात् त्रिभिस्त्रिभि: । एकैकस्तु ततो भीष्म राजन् विव्याध पञ्चभि:,राजन! उन नरेशोंने भीष्मजीपर एक ही साथ दस हजार बाण चलाये; परंतु भीष्मजीने उन सबको अपने ऊपर आनेसे पहले बीचमें ही विशाल पंखयुक्त बाणोंकी बौछार करके शीघ्रतापूर्वक काट गिराया। तब वे सब राजा उन्हें चारों ओरसे घेरकर उनके ऊपर उसी प्रकार बाणोंकी झड़ी लगाने लगे, जैसे बादल पर्वतपर पानीकी धारा बरसाते हैं। भीष्मजीने सब ओरसे उस बाण-वर्षाको रोककर उन सभी राजाओंको तीन-तीन बाणोंसे घायल कर दिया। तब उनमेंसे प्रत्येकने भीष्मजीको पाँच-पाँच बाण मारे
