महाभाग्यं च नृपतेर्भारतस्य महात्मन: । यस्येतिहासो द्युतिमान्‌ महाभारतमुच्यते,उन भरतवंशी महात्मा नरेशके महान्‌ सौभाग्यका भी मैं वर्णन करूँगा, जिनका उज्ज्वल इतिहास “महाभारत” नामसे विख्यात है

mahābhāgyaṃ ca nṛpater bhāratasya mahātmanaḥ | yasyetihāso dyutimān mahābhāratam ucyate ||

ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า “เราจักพรรณนาถึงมหาสิริมงคลของพระราชาผู้มีจิตวิญญาณสูงแห่งวงศ์ภารตะด้วย—ผู้ซึ่งประวัติอันรุ่งโรจน์เป็นที่รู้จักในนาม ‘มหาภารตะ’.”
