Concept: Śravaṇa (hearing) of the afterlife account produces puṇya that mitigates or frees one from the described duḥkha of the Yama-journey.

This verse states that simply hearing the described sufferings connected with the journey to Yama’s abode generates merit (puṇya), which helps one become free from those very sufferings.
It assumes a post-death journey toward Saṃyamanī (Yama’s realm) where hardships may be experienced; the teaching emphasizes that awareness and devotional listening to this account can mitigate the karmic consequences linked with that journey.
Regularly study or listen to dharma-oriented teachings (especially on karma and the afterlife), using the reflection to live ethically, reduce harmful actions, and cultivate merit through right conduct and remembrance.
