Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vainateya)

Beneficiary: Pitr

Timing: If the relevant observances were forgotten, perform them later, following the same procedure as on the mṛtāhika day.

Concept: If the two (time markers/rites) are forgotten even without absence, they should still be performed later as on the mṛtāhika day.

Vedantic Theme: Prāyaścitta-like restoration: dharma accommodates human lapse while preserving sacramental continuity.

Application: If required post-death observances were missed due to forgetfulness, perform them at the earliest opportunity following the same procedure as originally prescribed.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: karuna

Type: household/ritual setting

FAQs

This verse teaches that if essential rites are forgotten, they should still be taken up later in the same prescribed manner, emphasizing continuity of dharma even after omission.

In the Preta Kanda context, proper rites support the preta’s transition; the verse implies that delayed performance can still fulfill the intended ritual support when earlier steps were neglected.

If required memorial/funeral observances were missed due to oversight, consult a qualified priest and complete them later following the original procedure rather than abandoning them altogether.
