Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)

Beneficiary: Pitr

Timing: References navama-śrāddha (nine-day), sapiṇḍīkaraṇa timing (post-funeral consolidation), and ṣoḍaśa-śrāddha sequence (sixteen rites).

Concept: Ritual eligibility is conditioned by moral status; certain deaths/sins lead to exclusion from standard ancestral rites.

Vedantic Theme: Ritual (karma-kāṇḍa) as social-sacral order; adhikāra (eligibility) as a governing principle in dharma.

Application: Know śrāddha categories and consult tradition/ācārya for exceptional cases; emphasize ethical living to preserve ritual continuity; where exclusion is taught, communities may adopt compassionate alternatives consistent with their sampradāya.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

FAQs

This verse highlights that these śrāddha observances are considered essential post-death rites, and it stresses the gravity of situations in which they are not carried out for certain individuals.

By stating that the standard śrāddha sequence and sapiṇḍīkaraṇa may not occur for “such persons,” the verse implies a disrupted or unsupported transition in the preta-related journey where customary ancestral integration is not completed through rites.

Maintain diligence in family death-rites and ancestral duties, seek proper guidance from qualified priests when rites are uncertain, and uphold dharma so that post-death obligations are not neglected.
