Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Tārkṣya)
Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni
Ritual Type: Sapindana
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: After death, as prescribed; prerequisite before regular pitṛ-śrāddha is effective for a preta
Concept: Ritual causality: without sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, śrāddha does not properly connect to a preta; correct saṃskāra enables reception.
Vedantic Theme: Karma-bandha and saṃskāra as operative law in subtle realms; dharma as compassionate technology for transition.
Application: Ensure sapiṇḍīkaraṇa is performed per eligibility; until then, focus on prescribed preta-kriyās rather than assuming regular śrāddha suffices.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Type: liminal after-death condition
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.34 (discussion of preta-state, sapiṇḍīkaraṇa necessity, and śrāddha reach)
This verse states that without sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, śrāddha offerings are not duly received when the departed is still in the preta condition; the rite ritually integrates the departed with the Pitṛ lineage.
It distinguishes a transitional preta phase from the Pitṛ status; proper rites (especially sapiṇḍīkaraṇa) are presented as necessary for the deceased to be eligible to receive śrāddha as an ancestor.
If one follows śrāddha traditions, ensure the sequence and completion of prescribed post-death rites (including sapiṇḍīkaraṇa where customary) rather than performing offerings out of order or incompletely.
