Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Ritual Type: Ekoddishta
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: When multiple deaths occur within one gotra (contextual timing within post-death rites)
Concept: Ritual economy is permitted (one common sthaṇḍila) but individuality of karmic/ritual address is maintained (separate homa for each deceased).
Vedantic Theme: Recognition of individual saṃskāra and karmic particularity even within shared lineage; dharma as order that differentiates persons while sustaining family continuity.
Application: In same-gotra multiple bereavements, set up one consecrated altar area but perform distinct homa sequences and sankalpa for each person.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Type: ritual-ground (sthaṇḍila)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana śrāddha-vidhi: rules for multiple śrāddhas and separate sankalpa/homa
This verse teaches ritual order: the physical setup (sthaṇḍila) may be shared for those of the same gotra, but the homa must be individualized so each deceased receives distinct offerings and rites.
In the Preta Kanda context, correct, individualized rites support the departed’s post-death transition; even when deaths occur in one lineage, the offerings are not merged, preserving each person’s separate ritual entitlement.
If performing memorial/funeral fire-rites for multiple relatives of the same lineage, keep one properly prepared ritual space but ensure names/sankalpa and offerings are done distinctly for each, preferably under a qualified priest’s guidance.
