Lord Vishnu (in dialogue with Garuda/Vainateya)

Concept: Ritual rules adapt to age and saṃskāra-status; death does not suspend dharma’s need for proper procedure.

Vedantic Theme: Anityatā (impermanence) within vyavahāra: life-stages are provisional; dharma provides guidance amid uncertainty and grief.

Application: If death occurs as early as the fifth year, apply the relevant rule-set considering whether the child’s sacred rite/saṃskāra was performed or not, rather than assuming exemption.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.25.12 (perform earlier-stated daśapiṇḍaka even here)

FAQs

This verse sets dharmic age categories (kiśora up to sixteen, then yauvana) that help determine how rites like antyeṣṭi and related observances are framed for the deceased.

It explicitly notes death in the fifth year and distinguishes whether the person is avṛta or savṛta—i.e., whether key saṃskāras were not performed or were performed—since that affects ritual handling and classification.

When arranging funeral/śrāddha observances, consult competent priests and family tradition to account for the deceased’s age and completed saṃskāras, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all ritual.
