Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni

Concept: Forsaking kula-ācāra, pursuing improper ‘para-dharma’, and lacking vidyā and vṛtta (learning and conduct) results in preta-bhāva.

Vedantic Theme: Viveka and śuddhi depend on disciplined conduct; without vidyā and ācāra, the mind remains impure and bound to saṃsāra’s lower trajectories.

Application: Follow ethical best practices of one’s tradition without fanaticism; seek true learning with character; avoid adopting roles/paths unsuited to one’s competence or integrity.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

FAQs

This verse treats abandonment of established righteous lineage-practices (kula-mārga) as a serious moral deviation that contributes to an unsettled after-death condition (preta-bhāva).

It links preta-hood to a pattern of dharmic confusion and degradation—rejecting one’s proper duties, pursuing unsuitable obligations, and lacking both true learning (vidyā) and proper conduct (vṛtta).

Cultivate right knowledge and ethical conduct, follow duties appropriate to one’s life situation responsibly, and avoid adopting practices that contradict one’s core moral obligations—so life is ordered by dharma rather than imitation or confusion.
