FAQs

This verse raises a practical doubt: if even living dependents may not receive food, how can a simple offering help the departed; it sets up the teaching that śrāddha/anna offerings are meaningful through dharma and intention, not material luxury.

By speaking of giving “food” to him (the departed), the verse points to the Preta-state narrative where the deceased is supported by prescribed rites; it frames the discussion of how ritual offerings are transmitted as subtle support in the after-death journey.

Do not neglect dependents and the vulnerable while performing rituals; combine śrāddha with real-world charity and feeding the needy, remembering that sincerity and dharmic conduct are central to the rite’s efficacy.
