Lord Vishnu (in dialogue instructing Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Afterlife Stage: Yamaloka Journey
Ritual Type: Ekoddishta
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: Any śrāddha performed with nāma-gotra invocation; especially during preta-support period
Concept: Śrāddha invocation can still appease beings even across multiple rebirths; subtle identity markers (nāma-gotra) and ritual intention connect to the jīva’s karmic continuum.
Vedantic Theme: Saṃsāra and subtle body continuity: while gross bodies change, karmic linkage and ritual address operate on the subtle plane; efficacy depends on saṅkalpa and śāstra-vidhi.
Application: Do not abandon śrāddha thinking ‘they may have been reborn’; continue prescribed rites with proper naming/gotra as an act of dharma and support.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: antarā-loka / liminal post-death stations
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.10.15 (nāma-gotra-mantra as carrier); Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: descriptions of antarā-loka and preta sustenance via offerings
This verse states that beings in intermediate realms attain tṛpti (appeasement) when they are specifically identified by their nāma (name) and gotra (lineage), emphasizing precision in śrāddha and related rites.
It indicates that some beings remain in lokāntara (intermediate states/realms) across many births, and that ritual remembrance and correct identification can bring them relief and satisfaction.
When performing śrāddha, tarpaṇa, or remembrance, clearly state the deceased person’s name and lineage details as per tradition; it reinforces intentionality, continuity of duty (dharma), and respectful ancestral honoring.
