An Exposition of the Distinctions of Creation, Inert Matter, and the Lord
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच / ब्रह्मोक्तम्य मयोक्तस्य विवादो नास्ति सर्वथा / मूलसत्त्वे मिश्रितं च दशभागेन यद्रजः
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca / brahmoktamya mayoktasya vivādo nāsti sarvathā / mūlasattve miśritaṃ ca daśabhāgena yadrajaḥ
Śrī Kṛṣṇa (identified with Lord Viṣṇu in Purāṇic discourse)
Concept: No real contradiction between Brahmā’s statement and Kṛṣṇa’s; in primal sattva, rajas is mixed as one-tenth.
Vedantic Theme: Samanvaya (harmonization) of authoritative sources; guṇa-miśra upādhi explains differing descriptions without compromising ultimate truth.
Application: Resolve doctrinal conflicts by identifying levels of description (primary/secondary, aggregate/analytic); cultivate sattva by reducing rajas admixture.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.4.60 (aggregation into one portion)
This verse frames creation and conduct through guṇa-composition, asserting that primal sattva predominates while rajas is only a minor admixture, guiding how purity and activity are understood in Purāṇic philosophy.
Kṛṣṇa states there is no real contradiction, implying that differing explanations are complementary perspectives within the same doctrinal truth.
Cultivate sattva (clarity, restraint, truthfulness) while keeping rajas (restless drive) measured—using disciplined action without letting agitation dominate the mind.
