Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra within the dialogue framework)
Concept: Śaraṇāgati at Viṣṇu’s feet supersedes dependence on other deities or ritual expedients; ritual acts are secondary supports, not ultimate refuge.
Vedantic Theme: Īśvara-eka-śaraṇatā; the supreme cause and protector is Nārāyaṇa, while subsidiary devatā-upāsanā is limited in scope.
Application: Prioritize daily Viṣṇu-bhakti (nāma, pūjā, smaraṇa); if performing fertility/progeny rites, treat them as auxiliary and avoid absolutizing them as salvation.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: repeated injunctions to take refuge in Nārāyaṇa over ‘kṣudra-devatā’ worship (adjacent verses 3.28.142–145)
This verse frames Viṣṇu-pāda as the sure refuge when other supports fail, emphasizing śaraṇāgati (surrender) as the primary spiritual remedy.
It gives a specific upāya (ritual remedy) for santāna (progeny): worship of the bṛhatī plant and wearing/tieing its fruit at the neck, along with devotion to Viṣṇu.
Keep devotion central (prayer, ethical living, surrender to Viṣṇu) and, if following tradition, perform prescribed plant-worship remedies respectfully under guidance rather than as superstition.
