On the Causes/Means of Knowledge
तर्हि तेषां हि कालेषु दुः खं याति न संशयः / अतः प्रार्थक्यनयनं ये कुर्वन्त्येषु सर्वदा
tarhi teṣāṃ hi kāleṣu duḥ khaṃ yāti na saṃśayaḥ / ataḥ prārthakyanayanaṃ ye kurvantyeṣu sarvadā
Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Wrong separative cognition leads to duḥkha at karmically appointed times; therefore one should engage in merit-making, remembrance-inviting duties to avert distress.
Vedantic Theme: Karma-phala-niyati (inevitability of results) alongside the corrective role of right conduct and right view; saṃskāra formation through repeated practice.
Application: Adopt consistent sādhana and ethical duties (nitya/naimittika karma, devotion, remembrance practices) to prevent avoidable suffering and stabilize the mind at critical times.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: shanta

This verse states that suffering at certain post-death stages is inevitable for some, so one should consistently perform dharmic, merit-producing acts that ensure beneficial remembrance and support, reducing such distress.
It points to “appointed times” (kāleṣu) in the post-death journey when the departed may experience hardship, implying that one’s conduct and accumulated merit in life influence the severity of that experience.
Live in a way that builds lasting merit—truthfulness, charity, service, and ritual responsibility—so that both inner conscience and post-death consequences are eased, and one becomes worthy of supportive remembrance.
