Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Concept: Śarīra-lakṣaṇa as a traditional indicator for assessing constitution and fortune (saubhāgya/aiśvarya).

Vedantic Theme: Deha as upādhi (instrument/field) rather than the Self; observation without explicit ātma-vicāra.

Application: Use as a conventional checklist in physiognomic assessment; cultivate detachment by seeing the body as a set of traits, not identity.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.65.90-93 (continuation of bodily lakṣaṇas)

FAQs

This verse participates in a technical description of bodily characteristics, used in the text to categorize observable marks and relate them to broader doctrinal discussions about embodiment.

Indirectly: by detailing features of embodiment, it supports the Garuda Purana’s wider framework where the soul’s journey is discussed alongside the conditions and marks associated with birth and the lived body.

Use it as a reminder to study scripture carefully and avoid superstition: the Garuda Purana’s larger ethical thrust emphasizes dharma and karma over obsession with external marks.
