Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda) presenting pitṛ-tarpaṇa/śrāddha mantras

Afterlife Stage: Svarga

Ritual Type: Parvana

Beneficiary: Pitr

Timing: Parva/Amāvāsyā śrāddha context; also adaptable to annual tithi śrāddha; gotra-ucchāraṇa precedes the first offering.

Concept: Pitṛ-ṛṇa (debt to ancestors) is discharged through śrāddha; lineage remembrance and svadhā offerings sustain reciprocity between living and departed.

Vedantic Theme: Dharma as continuity of order across generations; yajña as gratitude and relational duty rather than mere desire-fulfillment.

Application: Regularly honor ancestors/elders; keep family lineage memory (names, gotra, stories) with humility; perform charity/feeding in their name.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: ritual-space

FAQs

This verse uses “svadhā” as the ancestral offering formula; repeating it formally directs oblations and reverence to specific lines of ancestors (paternal and maternal) so they are considered satisfied and supportive.

It invokes the Pitṛs as a complete hierarchy—across their classes and realms—especially the Agniṣvāttas, asking them to arrive by divine paths, accept the svadhā offering, and confer protection and blessings.

When performing śrāddha or tarpaṇa, one should remember both paternal and maternal ancestors, include lineage identification (gotra), and offer with reverence—treating the rite as a duty of gratitude and ethical continuity.
