Bhīma-Dvādaśī (Ekādaśī) Māhātmya and Varāha-Pūjā Vidhi
हिमं यथोष्णमाहन्यादनर्थं चार्थसंचयः / यथा प्रकर्तिनाद्दानं तपो वै विस्मयाद्यथा
himaṃ yathoṣṇamāhanyādanarthaṃ cārthasaṃcayaḥ / yathā prakartināddānaṃ tapo vai vismayādyathā
Lord Vishnu (in discourse to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Artha-saṃcaya (hoarding) breeds anartha; dāna without right intention and tapas from vanity lose spiritual fruit—inner motive determines efficacy.
Vedantic Theme: Tyāga and antaḥkaraṇa-śuddhi: purification depends on intention (bhāva), not mere external act.
Application: Practice measured saving with generosity; give consciously (not mechanically); undertake austerity for self-discipline, not social display.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: teachings on dāna, aparigraha-like restraint, and the futility of hypocritical rites
This verse implies that charity done merely as a habit or social reflex (prakṛti-mātra) lacks true spiritual fruit; dāna should be guided by dharma and sincere purpose, not automatic impulse.
It teaches that actions like wealth accumulation, giving, and austerity are not judged only by the outer act; hoarding tends toward suffering (anartha), and tapas done for display becomes spiritually barren.
Avoid compulsive hoarding; give thoughtfully and ethically, and practice discipline without seeking admiration—choose deeds that reduce ego and increase compassion.
