Although even during the time of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s presence on earth Kali had entered the earth to a slight extent through the impious activities of Duryodhana and his allies, Lord Kṛṣṇa consistently suppressed Kali’s influence. Kali could not flourish until Lord Kṛṣṇa had left the earth.

FAQs

This verse states that as long as the Lord (Ramāpati) was still present with His lotus feet touching the earth, Kali could not overrun the world—implying Kali’s influence expands when the Lord’s manifest presence withdraws.

In Canto 12’s discussion of Kali-yuga, Śukadeva explains the cosmic shift: the Lord’s visible presence restrains Kali, and with the Lord’s departure the age’s degrading influence gains strength.

Take shelter of the Lord’s lotus feet through bhakti—hearing, chanting, and remembrance—because the same divine refuge that restrained Kali cosmically also protects the devotee inwardly.
