Kṛṣṇa Enters Mathurā: City Splendor, Devotees’ Reception, and the Washerman’s Fate

स याचितो भगवता परिपूर्णेन सर्वत: । साक्षेपं रुषित: प्राह भृत्यो राज्ञ: सुदुर्मद: ॥ ३४ ॥

sa yācito bhagavatā paripūrṇena sarvataḥ sākṣepaṁ ruṣitaḥ prāha bhṛtyo rājñaḥ su-durmadaḥ

This verse highlights how arrogance (sudurmada) can make a person respond with contempt even to Bhagavān Himself, illustrating the danger of pride and the tendency toward offense (aparādha).

Although Kṛṣṇa politely requested cloth, the servant—being a proud royal attendant—identified with the king’s power and became irritated, replying with scorn due to arrogance.

It teaches to avoid ego born of position or association with power, and to respond with humility and respect—especially when someone asks sincerely—rather than reacting with contempt.
