Bali Mahārāja’s Surrender, Prahlāda’s Praise, and the Lord’s Mercy
Sutala and Future Indrahood
तत्र दानवदैत्यानां सङ्गात्ते भाव आसुर: । दृष्ट्वा मदनुभावं वै सद्य: कुण्ठो विनङ्क्ष्यति ॥ ३६ ॥
tatra dānava-daityānāṁ saṅgāt te bhāva āsuraḥ dṛṣṭvā mad-anubhāvaṁ vai sadyaḥ kuṇṭho vinaṅkṣyati
The Lord assured Bali Mahārāja of all protection, and finally the Lord assured him of protection from the effects of bad association with the demons. Bali Mahārāja certainly became an exalted devotee, but he was somewhat anxious because his association was not purely devotional. The Supreme Personality of Godhead therefore assured him that his demoniac mentality would be annihilated. In other words, by the association of devotees, the demoniac mentality is vanquished.
This verse warns that association with Dānavas and Daityas can make one’s mentality asuric, showing that character is shaped by company; therefore devotees seek satsanga and avoid dusanga.
In the context of the nectar being distributed, the Lord highlights that mixing with demoniac-minded beings breeds arrogance and opposition to dharma, but His divine presence and potency can instantly curb such pride.
Choose uplifting company, teachings, and media; reduce exposure to influences that cultivate ego, greed, or hostility, and regularly reconnect with the Lord through prayer, kīrtana, and scripture to dissolve pride.
