भस्म–रुद्राक्ष–शिवनाममाहात्म्य
The Greatness of Bhasma, Rudrākṣa, and the Name of Śiva
ब्रह्मस्वहरणं कृत्वा हत्वापि ब्राह्मणान्बहून् । न लिप्यते नरः पापैः शिवनामजपादरः
brahmasvaharaṇaṃ kṛtvā hatvāpi brāhmaṇānbahūn | na lipyate naraḥ pāpaiḥ śivanāmajapādaraḥ
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating Śiva Purāṇa teachings to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Kālāntaka
Significance: The extreme examples (brahma-sva-haraṇa, brahma-hatyā) underline the supremacy of Śiva’s grace accessed through nāma-japa, even for heavy pāśa (grave karmic bondage).
Type: panchakshara
Role: liberating
It teaches the supremacy of Śiva-nāma-japa: when the soul turns to Śiva with genuine reverence, the Lord’s grace purifies even heavy karmic stains and redirects the jīva from bondage (pāśa) toward liberation under Pati (Śiva).
In the Vidyeśvara/Viśveśvara context, devotion to Saguna Śiva is practiced through accessible means—especially nāma-japa alongside Liṅga worship. The verse highlights that inner surrender expressed as Śiva’s Name is a direct channel for Śiva’s saving grace.
Daily Śiva-nāma-japa—especially the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—done with ādara (reverent intent). It may be supported by Shaiva disciplines like vibhūti (tripuṇḍra) and rudrākṣa, but the core emphasis here is sincere repetition of the Name.
