Procedure for the Earthen Liṅga Worship
संगृह्य मृत्तिकां लिंगनिर्माणार्थं प्रयत्नतः । अतीव शुभदेशे च स्थापयेत्तां मृदं शुभाम्
saṃgṛhya mṛttikāṃ liṃganirmāṇārthaṃ prayatnataḥ | atīva śubhadeśe ca sthāpayettāṃ mṛdaṃ śubhām
లింగ నిర్మాణార్థం శ్రద్ధతో మట్టిని సేకరించి, ఆ శుభ మృత్తికను అత్యంత పవిత్రమైన స్థలంలో స్థాపించాలి.

Sthala Purana: Kāśī as Śiva’s kṣetra where worship of the liṅga—whether permanent or temporary (pārthiva)—is especially efficacious; this procedural verse supports kṣetra-based worship rather than narrating a distinct manifestation.
Significance: Merit accrues from preparing the liṅga with purity and right intention; in Kāśī this is framed as quick access to kṣetra-anugraha and purification of pāśa (bondage) through disciplined worship.
Role: nurturing
It teaches that devotion must be joined with śuddhi (purity) and saṃskāra (proper preparation): even the material used for the liṅga should be gathered and kept in a sanctified place, aligning the worshipper’s intent with Śiva’s sacred presence.
The verse supports liṅga-upāsanā as Saguna worship—approaching the transcendent Pati (Śiva) through a consecrated symbol. Preparing the clay and placing it in a holy spot is part of treating the liṅga as a sacred vessel for focused bhakti.
It suggests a preparatory rite: carefully collect pure clay and keep it in a highly auspicious, clean location before shaping the liṅga—ideally while maintaining purity and mentally remembering Śiva (often with japa such as “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”).
