(Avadhūteśvara-līlā) — Śiva Tests Indra’s Pride on the Way to Kailāsa
tuṣṭo bhava mahādeva pāhīndraṃ śaraṇāgatam | vahnireṣa samāyāti bhālanetrasamudbhavaḥ
Indra (addressing Lord Shiva)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Type: stotra
The verse highlights śaraṇāgati (taking refuge) as a direct path to Śiva’s anugraha (grace): even Indra seeks protection, showing that liberation and safety ultimately depend on Pati (Śiva), not worldly power.
Indra appeals to Mahādeva as the compassionate, approachable Saguna Lord who actively protects devotees. In Linga worship, the same protective grace is invoked through offerings, mantra, and surrender to Śiva as Pati.
Practice śaraṇāgati with japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and cultivate reverence for Śiva’s purifying power symbolized by the third-eye fire; optionally support with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa as Shaiva disciplines.
