The sages (ṛṣayaḥ)

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Type: celestial_realm

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A circle of sages seated on kusa grass in a forest hermitage, palms joined, asking a venerable narrator to reveal the true names of regions and mountains. Behind them, a stylized cosmic map unfurls like a scroll—mountain ranges as jeweled ridges and varṣas as lotus-shaped lands.","primary_figures":["Ṛṣayaḥ (assembled sages)","Sūta (or the principal narrator/ācārya figure)"],"setting":"Forest āśrama with sacrificial fire, palm-leaf manuscripts, and a symbolic cosmographic backdrop.","lighting_mood":"forest dappled","color_palette":["saffron ochre","leaf green","smoke white","earth brown","lapis blue"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: sages with gold-leaf halos seated around a small homa-kuṇḍa, the teacher figure elevated on a low throne; behind, a decorative cosmographic panel with embossed gold mountain ridges and lotus-shaped regions, rich reds/greens, ornate borders and temple-like framing.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate hermitage scene with delicate faces and fine linework; sages in white and pale saffron, a gentle stream and deodar-like trees, the teacher holding a manuscript; a faint stylized map of mountains in the background, cool palette and lyrical calm.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined sages in seated postures, expressive eyes, the teacher gesturing in exposition; background includes simplified mountain bands and circular varṣa motifs, natural pigments with strong reds/yellows/greens and deep blue accents.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: a devotional ‘knowledge pichwai’—sages arranged symmetrically around a central flame, floral borders, lotus medallions representing varṣas, peacocks perched on stylized mountains, deep blue ground with gold and white detailing."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"narrative","suggested_raga":"Yaman","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["crackling sacrificial fire","forest birds","soft hand-bell punctuations"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: ऋषयः + ऊचुः → ऋषय ऊचुः (विसर्गलोप); च + एव → चैव; निषधस्य + उत्तरेण → निषधस्योत्तरेण (अ-उ संधि) इत्यादृशं अन्यत्र।

FAQs

It signals a shift into sacred-geographical and cosmological cataloguing—listing the varṣas (regions), mountains, and the beings associated with mountainous realms.

“Sattama” is an honorific—“best among the good”—addressed to the interlocutor whom the sages are questioning (the knowledgeable narrator in the dialogue context of the chapter).

It emphasizes fidelity to accurate transmission: sacred knowledge—especially cosmography and tradition—should be conveyed as it is, without distortion or speculation.
