The Hymn to Gaṇapati

and the Rule of Worshipping Gaṇeśa First

अंते च पूजा कस्यैव कस्य को वा प्रभावकः । किंवा कं च फलं ब्रह्मन्पूजयित्वा लभेन्नरः

aṃte ca pūjā kasyaiva kasya ko vā prabhāvakaḥ | kiṃvā kaṃ ca phalaṃ brahmanpūjayitvā labhennaraḥ

Unspecified questioner (addressing a Brahman/sage)

Concept: Discerning the true object of worship and the principle that makes worship efficacious (prabhāva) is essential for right practice.

Application: Before adopting a ritual, ask: what is the intended fruit, who is the iṣṭa-devatā, and what inner disposition (śraddhā, purity, steadiness) makes the practice effective? Align daily worship with a clear spiritual aim.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A quiet hermitage interior where a sincere seeker, hands folded, asks a luminous sage about the decisive object of worship and the secret of efficacy. Palm-leaf manuscripts, a small altar flame, and a lotus motif hint at the Padma Purāṇa’s cosmology and devotional trajectory.","primary_figures":["inquiring devotee","sage (Brahman/ṛṣi)"],"setting":"forest āśrama with a simple yajña-kuṇḍa, lotus pond nearby, manuscripts and prayer beads","lighting_mood":"forest dappled","color_palette":["sandalwood beige","leaf green","lotus pink","smoke gray","sunlit gold"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: a seated sage on a carved wooden āsana teaching an earnest questioner with añjali-mudrā; gold leaf halo around the sage, ornate borders with lotus (padma) motifs, rich vermilion and emerald textiles, small altar lamp and conch depicted with gem-studded ornamentation.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: an intimate āśrama dialogue beside a lotus pond; delicate brushwork, soft facial expressions, cool greens and pale pink lotuses, distant hills, a thin stream, and a manuscript bundle near the sage; lyrical naturalism and refined linework.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined sage and devotee in a temple-like āśrama niche; stylized lotus medallions, warm yellow and red background, green foliage framing, large expressive eyes, ritual lamp and palm-leaf text rendered in traditional mural composition.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: devotional inquiry scene framed by intricate lotus borders; deep indigo ground with gold highlights, stylized lotuses and vines, a small central altar with lamp and conch, figures rendered in Nathdwara-inspired ornamentation and symmetrical floral patterns."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Yaman","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"reverent-soft","sound_elements":["soft temple bells","forest birds","gentle silence","faint crackle of lamp flame"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes:

FAQs

It asks which deity or principle is ultimately the proper object of worship, who makes worship effective (prabhāvaka), and what specific result (phala) is gained by worshipping a particular being.

By focusing on whom to worship and what fruit arises from that worship, it frames devotion as a purposeful spiritual path where the object of devotion determines the outcome.

It encourages discernment in religious practice—seeking clarity about the aim of worship, the rightful recipient, and the expected transformation or benefit rather than performing rituals mechanically.
