Adhyaya 21 — Kuvalayashva’s Descent to Patala and the Rescue of Madalasa
ko 'yaṃ devo nu yakṣo vā gandharvo vorago 'pi vā / vidyādharo vā samprāptaḥ kṛtapuṇyaratir naraḥ

The maiden interprets extraordinary presence through the Purāṇic hierarchy of beings and finally through karma (puṇya). This reflects a dharmic worldview: unusual fortune is often traced to merit rather than randomness.
Not a pancalakṣaṇa core item; it draws on Purāṇic cosmology (classes of beings) in service of narrative.
The enumeration of categories suggests the mind searching for an ‘appropriate container’ for the numinous. The final option—merit—points inward: the encounter may be the ripening of unseen causes.
