Educational Q&A

The verse highlights putra-dharma: a son’s responsibility to care for his mother and to perform the post-death rites (piṇḍa-dāna). It frames this duty not merely as ritual, but as an ethical bond of gratitude and lifelong companionship.

In Markandeya’s narration, Vinatā addresses Skanda directly, affirming him as her son and future performer of her funeral oblations, and expressing her wish to remain with him always—emphasizing maternal attachment and the social-religious importance of a son.
