Kauśika’s Anger Checked by Householder Dharma
brāhmaṇa uvāca— rājādhirāja! tava samīpaṁ rājā sedukena māṁ preṣitaḥ; tasmād ahaṁ tvattaḥ guru-dakṣiṇāṁ yācitum āgataḥ. tasyaiva upadeśānusāreṇa mayā tvayi yācanā kṛtā.
The verse foregrounds dharma in the form of rightful requesting and rightful giving: a brāhmaṇa seeks guru-dakṣiṇā not out of personal greed but as an act aligned with instruction and social-ethical order, reminding rulers of their responsibility to honor legitimate claims connected to learning and duty.
A brāhmaṇa addresses an emperor, explaining that he has been sent by King Seduka and has come specifically to request guru-dakṣiṇā. He emphasizes that the petition is made strictly according to Seduka’s directive, framing the request as authorized and duty-bound.
