Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 64: Arjuna’s Instruction to Sanjaya

Message to the Kuru Assembly

ekato hāsya dārāś ca jñātayaś ca sabāndhavāḥ | ātmā ca pṛthivī ceyam ekataś ca dhanaṃjayaḥ ||

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the extremity of partisan loyalty: people may be willing to renounce even family, bodily welfare, and sovereignty when devotion to a leader/ideal (here, implicitly Kṛṣṇa’s side) becomes paramount. It warns how attachment to faction can override ordinary dharmic bonds.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations and counsel, Vidura speaks to expose the real alignment of forces and motives: despite the vast worldly stakes on one side, the opposing side is represented as ‘Arjuna alone,’ underscoring both Arjuna’s decisive value and the willingness of others to sacrifice everything for the chosen alliance.
