अव्याह्तं व्याहवताच्छेय आहु: सत्यं वदेद्‌ व्याहृतं तद्‌ द्वितीयम्‌ प्रियं वदेद्‌ व्याह्ृतं तत्‌ तृतीयं धर्म वदेद्‌ व्याह्ृतं तच्चतुर्थम्‌

avyāhṛtaṃ vyāhṛtāc chreya āhuḥ | satyaṃ vaded vyāhṛtaṃ tad dvitīyam | priyaṃ vaded vyāhṛtaṃ tat tṛtīyaṃ | dharmaṃ vaded vyāhṛtaṃ tac caturtham ||

హంసుడు పలికెను— మాటలకన్నా మౌనమే శ్రేయస్కరం అని వారు చెబుతారు. మాట్లాడవలసి వస్తే సత్యం పలకడం రెండవ శ్రేయస్సు. సత్యమూ ప్రియమూ అయిన వాక్యం మూడవది. సత్యం, ప్రియం, ధర్మానుగుణం—ఇవన్నీ కలిగిన వాక్యం నాలుగవది, అత్యుత్తమం.
