Vidurā–Putra Saṃvāda: Utsāha, Kīrti, and Kṣātra Resolve

Udyoga-parva 131

etad u dharmyam adharmyaṁ vā janmanaivābhyajāyathāḥ | te tu vaidyāḥ kule jātā avṛttyā tāta pīḍitāḥ |

Educational Q&A

The verse frames an ethical appeal: dharma is not merely abstract correctness but must respond to real human distress. Even the learned and well-born can be driven to suffering by loss of livelihood, and a righteous decision should take that hardship into account.

Vāyudeva addresses Śrī Kṛṣṇa, asserting that Kṛṣṇa can discern whether the speaker’s claim is dharmic or adharmic. He then points to the Pāṇḍavas’ present condition—despite noble birth and learning, they are currently afflicted due to lack of means—strengthening the moral urgency of intervention or just settlement.
