Educational Q&A

The verse underscores a moral urgency: prevent war while there is still time. Once the principal agents of battle are fully prepared—arms readied, ritual sanctions invoked, and resolve hardened—violence becomes difficult to stop. Ethically, it prioritizes timely reconciliation over fatalistic acceptance of conflict.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war diplomacy, the narration marks the threshold before hostilities become irreversible. The readiness of Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna, the presence of the Gāṇḍīva, and Dhaumya’s ritual oblations for the enemy’s destruction are presented as signs that the machinery of war is about to turn; therefore peace should be secured before these steps occur.
