Seeing his wife—thin and worn with grief—Indra reflected, “Alas, what sorrow has come upon me! While I remain hidden here, she, distressed, has searched for me and with great effort has come all this way.” Then Indra said to her, “How are you managing to live?” She replied, “Nahusha has taken the place of Indra and is summoning me to make me his wife. I have obtained only a short respite, and I have given my word that after the appointed time I will comply.” Indra said, “Go, and tell Nahusha this: ‘O king, mount an unprecedented conveyance yoked with sages and come to carry me away into your service.’ Indra has many great vehicles that delight the mind, but I have already ridden them all; therefore you should approach me by some other, extraordinary vehicle.” Thus instructed, Śacī departed joyfully, and Indra once again entered the knot of the lotus-stalk to remain concealed.

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights ethical resilience under coercion and the use of prudent strategy to avert adharma: Śacī protects marital fidelity and Indra’s legitimacy by buying time and setting a condition designed to expose Nahusha’s arrogance, implying that power without humility and restraint leads to downfall.

Indra, still in hiding, sees Śacī exhausted from searching for him. She reports that Nahusha, acting as Indra, is pressuring her to become his wife after a short deadline. Indra instructs her to tell Nahusha to come on a unique conveyance “yoked with sages,” a trap that will later provoke Nahusha’s hubris and trigger his fall; Śacī returns, and Indra hides again in the lotus-stalk knot.
