Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that the second life-stage is the gṛhastha (householder) āśrama: one should remain at home, marry righteously, establish the sacred fires, and uphold disciplined vows through regular ritual and ethical domestic responsibilities.

Vyāsa begins an instruction on gārhasthya-dharma (householder conduct) in Śānti Parva, describing how a person should live during the household stage—centered on lawful marriage, maintaining the sacred fires, and daily observances like agnihotra.
