Educational Q&A

The verse frames an ethical inquiry about what truly sustains a person—social ties, accumulated deeds, material wealth, or discerning wisdom—setting up Bhīṣma’s guidance that lasting stability is grounded in dharma-informed understanding rather than fragile external supports.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction scene, Yudhiṣṭhira questions the elder Bhīṣma on the battlefield bed about the proper refuge for human life, initiating a didactic discussion on the foundations of security and right living.
