kathaṁ duryodhano ’smābhir hīta iti anapatrapāḥ |

The verse highlights the ethical weight of public conscience in dharma: even in war, actions must withstand moral scrutiny. Sañjaya frames Duryodhana’s death as something that invites shame, implying that victory gained through questionable means cannot be spoken of proudly before society.
In the aftermath of the great war, Sañjaya reflects on the manner of Duryodhana’s killing and suggests that the Pāṇḍavas would be hard-pressed to describe it openly without disgrace. The remark points to controversy surrounding the circumstances of Duryodhana’s defeat.
