Educational Q&A

The verse underscores that cosmic stability depends on divine balance: wrath brings upheaval, while grace restores order. Ethically, it warns that immense power—divine or human—must be governed by restraint, and that seeking favor through devotion can redirect destructive momentum toward restoration.

Vaiśampāyana describes Śiva’s overwhelming cosmic influence: when Śiva is angered, the world becomes unstable; when he is pleased, it becomes stable again. In this context, Śiva has become pleased with a particular person (understood in the Sauptika narrative as Aśvatthāmā), setting the stage for subsequent actions empowered or sanctioned by that favor.
