Educational Q&A

A ruler grounded in dharma begins with attentive concern: he reads signs of distress in a counselor, asks about personal well-being, and then inquires about the alignment of the king’s heirs and the obedience of the subjects—linking private emotion, court ethics, and public order.

In the Sabha Parva context, Vidura arrives with a troubled demeanor. Yudhiṣṭhira notices the absence of cheer and questions him: whether he has come safely, whether Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons are acting in harmony with the old king, and whether the populace remains under control—hinting at instability in Hastināpura.
