Bhīṣma–Śiśupāla-saṃvādaḥ
Bhishma and Shishupala’s exchange in the assembly
वृद्ध: किल समुद्रान्ते कश्चिद्धंसो5भवत् पुरा । धर्मवागन्यथावृत्त: पक्षिण: सोडनुशास्ति च,पूर्वकालकी बात है, समुद्रके निकट कोई बूढ़ा हंस रहता था। वह धर्मकी बातें करता; परंतु उसका आचरण ठीक उसके विपरीत होता था। वह पक्षियोंको सदा यह उपदेश किया करता कि धर्म करो, अधर्मसे दूर रहो। सदा सत्य बोलनेवाले उस हंसके मुखसे दूसरे-दूसरे पक्षी यही उपदेश सुना करते थे
vṛddhaḥ kila samudrānte kaścid haṃso 'bhavat purā | dharmavāg anyathāvṛttaḥ pakṣiṇaḥ so 'nuśāsti ca ||
పూర్వకాలంలో సముద్రతీరాన ఒక వృద్ధ హంస ఉండేది. అది ధర్మం గురించి గొప్ప మాటలు చెప్పేది; కానీ దాని ప్రవర్తన మాత్రం వాటికి విరుద్ధంగా ఉండేది. అయినా అది ఇతర పక్షులకు ఎల్లప్పుడూ బోధించేది—“ధర్మం ఆచరించండి, అధర్మానికి దూరంగా ఉండండి.”
