अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः
The Commencement of the Great Departure
वहाँ पहुँचकर उन्होंने पर्वतकी भाँति मार्ग रोककर सामने खड़े हुए पुरुषरूपधारी साक्षात् अग्निदेवको देखा ।।
tatra prāpya te śailam iva mārgaṁ ruddhvā puruṣarūpadharaṁ sākṣād agnidevaṁ dadṛśuḥ || tato devaḥ sa saptārciḥ pāṇḍavān idam abravīt | bho bho pāṇḍusutā vīrāḥ pāvakaṁ māṁ nibodhata ||
అక్కడికి చేరి వారు పర్వతంలా మార్గాన్ని అడ్డగించి ముందర నిలిచిన పురుషరూపధారి సాక్షాత్తు అగ్నిదేవుని చూశారు। అప్పుడు ఏడు జ్వాలాజిహ్వలతో ప్రకాశించే ఆ దేవుడు పాండవులతో ఇలా అన్నాడు—“ఓ వీర పాండుపుత్రులారా! నన్ను పావకుడైన అగ్నిగా తెలుసుకొనుడి।”
