अर्जुनस्य शीघ्रप्रयाणं भीम-शकुनियुद्धं च

प्रत्यदृश्यत् ततः कर्ण: पज्चालांस्त्वरितो ययौ | उस समय पाण्डवों तथा हमलोगोंमेंसे कोई भी योद्धा युद्धसे मुँह फेरकर पीछे हटता नहीं दिखायी दिया। तब कर्णने तुरंत ही पांचालोंपर आक्रमण किया ।। ४० $ ।। तस्मिन् क्षणे नरश्रेष्ठ गजवाजिजनक्षय:
pratyadṛśyat tataḥ karṇaḥ pāñcālāṁs tvarito yayau |
సంజయుడు అన్నాడు—పాండవులలోనూ మా పక్షంలోనూ ఎవ్వరూ యుద్ధం నుండి ముఖం తిప్పి వెనుదిరగడం కనిపించకపోవడంతో, కర్ణుడు వెంటనే వేగంగా పాంచాలులపై దూసుకెళ్లాడు। ఆ క్షణంలో, ఓ నరశ్రేష్ఠా, ఏనుగులు-గుర్రాలు-మనుష్యుల నాశనం మొదలైంది।
