Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the dharmic weight of a pratijñā (solemn vow): Arjuna’s identity as a righteous warrior is tied to keeping his word. His intense recollection of a sacred mantra shows that ethical resolve is sustained not only by strength but also by disciplined inner practice.

Sanjaya reports that Arjuna, focused on preserving his vow, keeps remembering a particular mantra; in the course of that concentrated remembrance he becomes overcome by sleep (or a trance-like swoon), setting up the ensuing episode connected (by the chapter’s framing) with approaching Śiva and offering praise.
